My Story.
My Health. My Wake-Up Call.
Written by Dr. Emily Johnson, Director of Women’s Health Services at LMH and 505 Women’s Health.
As the female hormones decline and eventually fade away (menopause), we first have to make it through 5–15 years of tumultuous changes month to month. And as our hormones show up some months and not others, we begin to experience the negative health impacts in our other systems.
For instance, I have a significant family history of high cholesterol and coronary artery disease on my mother’s side. As I’ve aged to 48 (just being transparent here… be kind 😅), my cholesterol numbers have continued to creep up.
Despite fiber supplementation, daily exercise, a pretty decent diet, an apple a day (for real, every single day), and adequate red wine consumption (hold the judgment… I have high schoolers), it has now gotten so high that I decided it was time to take the next step and do a calcium score to see if I needed a statin.
I mean… my HDL is over 100, so that probably negates my high LDL, right?
NO HO HO!
I did NOT get a calcium score of zero, and I am at “mild risk” for heart attack, <10%.
What?!?!?!?
I have NEVER done so poorly on a test.
And ya wanna know what? My hormones are not in menopausal range and are actually better than they were 6 months ago.
Perimenopause, y’all.
Two things:
Ladies, we cannot blame everything on our hormones. But we DO need to pay attention to all body systems as we are aging and going through Perimenopause and Menopause.
Make sure you have a provider who can walk with you through it all, despite its many changes.
My calcium score at the MAC at LMH was so easy:
✔️ Fasting lipid panel (blood work)
✔️ 15-minute non-contrasted CT scan in Radiology (3 big breaths and a whirling noise — no enclosed tube)
✔️ Follow-up with Misha Craven, NP, to discuss results and management
I will be starting a statin tonight, along with a fish oil supplement, and rechecking in 3 months.
And I am not even menopausal yet.
Y’all… let’s take care of ourselves.
💗 Get your Mammograms. 1 in 8 women gets Breast Cancer. Prevention and early detection are CRITICAL!
☀️ Get your Skin checked. Melanoma is so common. Did you know more people get skin cancer from tanning beds than smokers get lung cancer each year?
🩺 Get your Pap for cervical cancer screening. Yes, even if you’ve had a hysterectomy you may still need one.
🧪 Get your cholesterol and glucose checked. gulp.
⚖️ Have your weight assessed and be willing to hear what that means for your health. Obesity, which is defined as a body mass index of >30, increases one’s risk of 13 different kinds of Cancer.
🩻 Get age and risk-based Colon Cancer screening.
🫁 Get risk-based Lung Cancer screening.
